It usually occurs at the initial phase of an infection. It is caused by inflammatory process in the respiratory tract. It is characterized by no expectoration of discharge.

As the infection progresses, the cough changes from dry to wet, associated with expectoration of discharge, accumulated in the respiratory tract. As a result, it is eliminated from the organism through coughing.
